Let’s start getting your shine on. Tell us who you are beyond an author. Beyond an author, I am a wife, mother and educator. I love, love to read and could spend every waking moment with my Kindle in front of me. I also run 5 days a week. I’m a complete shoe and purse-aholic. Let’s not talk about how many I own.

Tell us your preferred writing genre and the genre you prefer to read. I love to write MM, although I am taking a stab at MF. Wow, is that different. I never realized how difficult it is to write MF and all the girl bits…*smiling* As far as reading, I have to stick with MM, but I love MF erotica as well. And I’m always up to reading a good ménage.

Tell us an important lesson, on the business side of publishing, that you've learned on your journey. Promote. Promote. Promote. No matter how much the publisher helps promote you, as an author it is your responsibility to get your name out there. Social Media is the future and I’m not sure an author can survive without getting out there on Face Book, Twitter, Blogs, etc.

Going back to the beginning, show us the day you received your publication offer or the first time you saw your bound book. Damn, I couldn’t believe when I got my first offer. You send the book in, but you doubt yourself and check the e-mail every day. That’s what I did. And when the e-mail finally came through offering me a contract I jumped up and down like a loon. I was really going to happen. Even better, when the cover artist send me the mock up cover I smiled from ear to ear and kept it there for days! When my release date arrived, I checked the website over fifty times that day, just to see the book. I know, I’m a dork.

Do you write everyday? I try to write something every day, but am not always successful. I also review books, so I maintain an author’s blog and a review site blog. On top of all the reading and writing, I work full time outside the home. If I can get even one thousand words down a night during the week, I’m happy.

What do your family and friends think about you writing erotic romance?  I ask because some people us a PEN name and don’t tell their friends or family they write erotic romance? You hit the nail on the head. My family has no idea that I write, so yes…I use a pen name L

If you were a Superheroine/Hero, would you wear tights and a cape? I would definitely wear a cape and tights. And I’d also want a huge letter across my chest for my super heroine name. I have no idea what it would be, but, I’m so there. It wouldn’t bother me to run around in a crazy outfit, although I’d love to have purple in it- my favorite color. I can picture me now, purple tights and a black cape, with a large EA on my chest….oh mayber my name should be Evelise the Avenger? And my wild curls blowing in the wind?

I’M RESPONSIBLE FOR MY NAME

It was 2008. The contract was signed, the book submitted, due to be released in April. When the edits arrived, all life around me came to a halt as I worked through the changes that needed to be made before my first book was ready to be released to the public. The cover came and I thought I had died and gone to author heaven when I saw my name on the front of the cover. That was my name on that cover.

MY NAME.

I made a sad attempt at a website on GeoCities. I joined yahoo groups and started talking, asking questions. I squealed with delight when I got to talk with my favorite authors and they treated me like an equal and not just a fan girl. I soaked up every word they shared with me.

And then came the news that made my heart still in my chest. Since all of my ducks were in a row, my book was being released early…six months early. I had less than ten days to get ready. I panicked and went to the people I had been asking questions of… And that was the day I learned that I had a responsibility to pass on my knowledge to the next newbie.

If someone writes a better book than me, good for them. If they take first spot on the best selling list, good for them. If they bump me out of my spot, good for them. If their book becomes more popular than mine, good for them. I wish only the best to every author out there.

The only person responsible for my books is me. The editor is there to help me put out a better book, but I wrote it. The publisher is there to help me put out a better book, but I wrote it. The cover artist is there to help me put out a better book…but it is still my book. I choose what I write. I choose what I submit. I choose what to change in the edits. I even choose whether to accept the cover the artist sends me or not.

That book has MY NAME on it.

I’ve talked with a lot of veteran authors, and just as many authors new to the writing world. Some are very secretive. Some don’t want to share what they know because they are afraid it will affect their sales. Some are worried that their ideas will be stolen. These are all very legitimate reasons to hold back what they know.

And then there are the others, the ones that took a scared, unknown author under their wings and showed her the ropes. They offered advice. They offered a chance to be on their blogs so word of my book could get out. They taught me how to blog and post and where I needed to go to meet readers and develop relationships with people all over the world.

In one moment in time, when all of these people I barely knew came to my rescue and helped an unknown author get the word out about her book, I learned what kind of writer I wanted to be. So, don't be afraid to ask your questions. I will answer if I can.

Do you really write everyday? Nope. I wish I could. But I have my covers to design and I do love my job.  Time management would benefit me beautifully!

 

What would you say is a true hero? Strong enough to put up with me, sweet enough to understand me, and smart enough to appreciate me!

 

How much does reader reaction mean to you as an author? I don't think readers realize the impact they have on an author with their reviews.  Good reviews have you soaring, bad ones have the power to beat you down!

 

When did you know you wanted to be a writer? In the sixth grade. I wrote a story for a competition and I actually won!  I was invited to attend a young author's conference.  It was amazing!

 

Do you have any unfinished projects sitting around? Oh Lord yes!  I have more unfinished projects than finished ones

 

What was the biggest obstacle you had to overcome to become an author? My inborn insecurities.

 

What do your family and friends think about you writing erotic romance?  I ask because some people us a PEN name and don’t tell their friends or family they write erotic romance? Very few people know about my writing. I don't want them reading it. Not just because some of it is erotic, but because much of it is my inner most thoughts, etc.  Isn't if funny that I don't mind showing that to strangers but I don't want my friends to see?

You have to ask a fictional character out on a date. Who would you ask and what would you do together? I'd totally ask out Zane Weather from THE DEMON IS IN THE DETAILS.  He's over two thousand years old.  I bet he has some stories to tell...and did I mention he's super hot?????

 

Do you take suggestions on books or ideas from your fans? Just this evening a wonderful lady wrote to me and told me much she enjoyed IN SARAH'S SHADOW.  She asked me to write another American Historical Romance...when I'm done with my current WIP, I think I'll do that!

 

What project are you working on now? I'm working on THE GROUPIE right now.  It's about a woman who wins ticket to see her country music idol.  They meet, have sex but that's only the beginning.  Just let me say, she has a lot to learn about Thad Curtis!

 

What do you find the most difficult to write? Dialogue? Back story? Emotion? I worry that my descriptions are lacking. After I write the first draft I go back and fill in to clarify the picture in my head for my readers.

 

Do you have the support of family and friends? My family is terrific and are very supportive. I'm very lucky in that regard.

 

Do you prefer stand-alone books or series? I prefer stand-alones but I think readers prefer series. 

 

If you could travel through time to visit a special time period or famous person, what or who would it be and why? I would love to go back in time and tell William Wallace who he could and couldn't trust!  I'm a big fan of Scottish history and I find the medieval period fascinating.  Of course, I'd want to bring, soap and deodorant with me!

"You’d be helping me out," she replied, her mind reeling. What was she doing? He was a stranger. Handsome, seemingly kind and oh so sexy, but a stranger! And yet when he stared into her eyes, the intensity of his gaze had her legs growing weak. She wanted him like she’d never wanted a man before.

"I don’t know, was I reading you wrong?"

He ran his fingers through his chestnut hair, not answering.

"You don’t find me attractive?" she asked in a rush, shame at needing to know the answer burning in her cheeks.

"I didn’t say that. I’ll take you and it’ll be good. Is that what you want?"

"What if I say yes?"

He slammed the lid of the grill and walked to where she stood, backing her up against the house. "Is that what you’re saying?" he asked, his chest rising and falling in rapid, excited breaths. "I want you to know, I did not bring you here for that."

His admission made her want him all the more. "Yes. Now what do you say?"

"I say, let’s don’t waste any more time."

CHATTING WITH GAY ROMANCE AUTHOR -- JAMIE LAKE

Please welcome Jamie Lake as she  tells about her latest novel "Bad Boy" and answers a few questions for us.

For those who haven’t read Bad Boy, what’s it about? It’s actually based on a true story in part. I tell the story of a kindergarten teacher who does erotic massages at night and what happens when he tries to live a double-life. The real story wasn’t a kindergarten teacher but I thought that would be the last person who you’d ever expect to do that type of career.

How did you come up with such hot sex scenes? Thanks! Well, it’s not easy because m/m readers have read about every position ever created so it was really about brainstorming with my editor, trying to come up with something fresh and hot and something that maybe was a fantasy for me, personally.

There’s a thin line between prostitution and nude massages, how did you keep your character from dipping into the dark world? That was probably one of the biggest challenges in writing Bad Boy because you want the scenes to be hot but you can’t let the character go so far that it’s illegal. I think the trick was, staying more on the foreplay side of the fence as much as possible.

How many parts will be in the Bad Boy series? Right now, there are only 5 parts but if the readers ask for more, then I might very well add more. You never know!
